Modesty
In the
central verse associated with the image of
Modesty, the oracle says, Thus the superior
man reduces that which is too much, and augments
that which is too little. He weighs things and
makes them equal." This could be taken as a
description of the musical art of harmony. In a
great string quartet, each instrument plays its
essential part. In the early days, the first
violin stood out as its leader, but each composer
starting with Haydn, through Mozart, Beethoven,
Brahms, and others, gradually made each of the
parts more equal. Ultimately that meant an
exalted kind of music that, for some people, is
the highest attainment of any art. The string
quartet uses modest resources, but one could
imagine a string quartet playing when in the
central verse associated with the image of
Enthusiasm, the oracle says, Thunder comes
resounding out of the earth: the image of
Enthusiasm. Thus the ancient kings made music in
order to honor merit, and offered it with
splendor to the Supreme Deity, inviting their
ancestors to be present.
