In its traditional representation in the Waite-Rider deck, one sees a human heart pierced by swords. The image describes jealousy and betrayal, and it usually portends heartbreak. It signals rejection and emotional isolation. In a larger sense, however, the image pertains to all those situations in which we are pulled in various and contradictory directions. In one very interesting case, a client asked about a profound love he had developed for a woman who was living in an unhappy marriage. We do not feel morally qualified to judge our clients, and as Readers, we take very seriously the biblical injunction, "Judge not." But when we drew various images describing obstruction and blockage, and also the image of Three Swords, we knew that we had to caution our client about the need for restraint and circumspection. The situation did not promise a favorable outcome, and it seemed wise under the circumstances for our client to maintain a strict sense of self-control. |
