And if the anthem of that era was the Beatle's "Give Peace a Chance," its melancholy lament was John Lennon's "Imagine." It may be that the one thing most sorely lacking in the world is the endangered human faculty of imagination. If this is true, then the indispensable Tarot image for our time is the image of Seven Cups. It describes not just the world of fantasy and creative illusion, but that all-important willingness to envision something new and beautiful in the place of all that is outworn and ugly. Moreover, it often evokes advice in the game of life that was once expressed best by a great master of the game of chess: i.e., there is always a better move than the one you are thinking of. The most common error that people make is to conceive of their options too narrowly. Yet there are also those who are too easily distracted by the multitude of options open to them at any given point in their development. This was the case with one of our clients, a classic example of the individual who turns the task of "finding himself" into the never-ending procrastinations of the perennial student. He had earned three advanced degrees in various graduate schools, and been twice around the world, and still didn't know what he wanted to do with his life. We were not surprised to draw the image of Seven Cups in a reversed position for his Reading. We suggested that he might want to consider settling down for a while, and getting a job, if only to clarify what he did not want to do with his life. From there it might be more possible to go on to narrowing his options with regard to what he really did want to do. As it turned out, he chose a job that he was surprised to find immensely fulfilling, and he is still doing it today. |
