He also said, "There is no hope for the satisfied man." But don't tell this to the person pictured in the image of Nine Cups. Satisfaction has its proper place. The good things in life are here to be enjoyed, and their abundance is a blessing. There is something sad about the man who is always on his way to going somewhere, who never arrives, who never knows the simple joy of being just where he is. This message may be especially cogent in the case of Americans, always striving to better themselves and their position in life, working longer hours with fewer days of vacation than the people of any other nation. Even the Divinity rested on the seventh day. Could anyone but an American make a fortune nigh on one hundred billion dollars, and still consider it not enough? After raising three beautiful children to adulthood, and seeing the last one out the door, one of our clients finally contemplated the possibility of fulfilling the dream of her youth, which was to be a writer of great historical novels. For years she had researched the lives of her own forbears who had been among the earliest settlers of the Alaskan frontier. Now that she at last had the freedom to begin the work, she was feeling inadequate to the task. She asked for our insight into her situation, and we were most happy to tell her about the meaning of the image of Nine Cups, which we had drawn for her Reading. This image affirmed in no uncertain terms that she had an abundance of all of the elements that go into making such a project a success. She only needed a little bit of reassurance. Who doesn't need a little bit of reassurance now and then? |
