Magic in this sense is surely real. But the great bulk of magicians are actually highly skilled tricksters. A magician is somebody who knows how to put his props in perfect order so that anything he needs can be touched in the slightest fraction of a second. Everything is ready to hand, and, with training, the hand is quicker than the eye. Then, you have magic. People like to think that something magical will happen out of nowhere, the "deus ex machina" that emerges from the wings to resolve their problems. That happens sometimes, but more often than not, success comes out of putting all the right elements together in the right way. It is the product of a very healthy respect, not for the supernatural, but for the material elements in life that demand discipline and order. A client asked us about a prospective move to Europe, of which he had been dreaming for many years. When we drew the image of The Magician in a reversed position, we knew that he had not yet put all the elements in place that would make such a move a success. We advised him to take time first to put together more concrete plans, to prepare himself more methodically, and to make sure that all possible contingencies were anticipated and thoroughly understood. |
