The Magician

The image of The Magician evokes, of course, the idea of magic, which people associate with the supernatural and with miracles. Magic in this sense is surely real. But the great bulk of magicians are actually highly skilled tricksters. A magician is somebody who knows how to put his props in perfect order so that anything he needs can be touched in the slightest fraction of a second. Everything is ready to hand, and, with training, the hand is quicker than the eye. Then, you have magic. People like to think that something magical will happen out of nowhere, the "deus ex machina" that emerges from the wings to resolve their problems.
