The Knight of Cups

The "knights" of the Tarot Oracle are traditionally associated with young men (and now, in a more modern perspective, with men and women), and with all those traits typical of a healthy and optimistic youth. The Knight of Cups is described as compassionate, loving and romantic (but sometimes rather melodramatic and inconstant as a Don Juan); highly imaginative and sensitive (but also excessively dreamy and passive); highly refined and gracious (but at times overly temperamental and affected); introspective and given to spiritual quests (but often too introverted and impractical). The appearance of the image of The Knight of Cups portends progress as one moves forward on the path of love and marriage; in artistic pursuits of all kinds; with any kind of spiritual quest; toward the fulfillment of an ideal; and in any effort to express a healing compassion and caring for others.

A client called to ask for advice with regard to a new relationship. She was dating a man whom she had met at a business conference, someone to whom she felt a very powerful physical and emotional attraction. The man in question was apparently unusually polite and solicitous, opening doors and bringing flowers. Her only reservation arose with his insistent attempts to take her to a more intimate level of interaction than she felt prepared for as yet. In our Reading, the appearance of the image of The Knight of Cups in a reversed position gave us reason to advise caution. We sensed a tinge of dishonesty, and that all was not quite right with this very amorous young man. We reminded our client that she did not know him very well, and had not known him for very long. We suggested that it might be wise to limit her vulnerability rather strictly under the circumstances. Several weeks later, our client learned that her prospective beau was in fact married. She was so very glad to have maintained the appropriate boundaries in her relationship with him, and in this way, to have avoided an unnecessarily painful and probably hopeless entanglement.
