It depends on a commitment to honesty, and the elaboration of ethical principles, which have been the only lasting concern of all true philosophy. Justice requires a strict accountability in human affairs, based on a thorough understanding of the laws of cause and effect. Beyond these main points, it only remains to say that the image of Justice often portends a major decision, sometimes imposed by the authority of external powers. When the image of Justice appears, be careful to assess your position in terms of what is right from an objective point of view. All subjective emotions and motivations have a secondary significance when the issue involves a principle of justice. A client called in a state of extreme distress over his relationship with one of his daughters. She was going through the all-too-common difficulties that many of today's young people experience as a result of involvement with and addiction to drugs. She was not living with her parents, but moving around in a series of temporary arrangements of one kind or another. She had been through one drug-treatment program, but had failed to master her addiction. Now, after being arrested by the police, and finding no room in a publicly-funded treatment program that might keep her out of prison, she wanted her father to pay for her committal to a private hospital. He felt that he had reached the end of his patience with her, and was inclined to wash his hands of the whole matter. In our Reading for him, we drew the image of Justice, appearing in a reversed position. We reminded our client that his daughter was very young. It was possible, after all, that he was misjudging her prospects for recovery and renewal on a new path of healthy development. In fact, we could see that she was indeed going to succeed in overcoming her drug habit, if only given one more chance to make it happen. We felt that she deserved this chance, and that prison was no place for her. Fortunately, her father relented. Today, she is healthy, off drugs, and completing her studies to be a registered nurse. |
