Many people have the erroneous idea that when they are not doing anything, then nothing is happening. Is it any wonder our world is so busy, so clamorous and discordant, and, yes, so lacking in elementary faith? And so, the image of Four Swords has a message that all of us would do well to heed. We mustn't allow ourselves to lose the capacity to sense the movement of the spirit in the quiet place that is within us. We have forgotten how God appeared to Elijah: "and a great strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice." On the other hand, it must be said that, in the art of life, there are no prescriptions that apply across the board to all people in all situations. Thus, for one of our clients, a very talented fellow working at a very unchallenging and boring job with few rewards, the appearance of the image of Four Swords had a very different message. In his Reading, the image appeared in a reversed position, indicating that he was taking entirely too passive an attitude to his life. When he asked why nobody took notice of him, we suggested that he be more active, even at the risk of seeming (to himself, that is) somewhat obstreperous, and, in general, to make a bigger noise in the world. |
