A warning is
often the primary message conveyed by the image of Four
Cups: "He who hesitates is lost." In this
image, the spirit gets mired in apathy and passivity.
Under its influence, a man becomes disengaged from life,
his gear stuck in neutral. He is withdrawn and lost in
reverie. Yet it is not always possible to put a negative
construction on this condition. One treads on ground here
that too easily gives itself to a conventional and
conformist attitude to human nature. Plato tells us that
his mentor, Socrates, would stand rooted to the spot, in
the blazing heat of summer, or the bitter cold of winter,
for days at a time, while he contemplated some issue of
the intellect that had seized his consciousness.
Bodhidarma sat for years facing the wall of his cave
before giving the world his transcendent vision of Zen
Buddhism, one of the sublime glories of the human spirit. When, however, the image of Four Cups appears in its reversed position, there is hardly ever any doubt as to its negative influence on the situation at hand. One of our clients asked for our insight into an opportunity for a promotion at her place of work. She was reluctant to assume the burden of intensified responsibility that it entailed. When we drew for her the image of Four Cups in its reversed position, we reminded her that opportunities do not come knocking every day. Our client took the promotion, and was a great success in her new position. |
