It pertains to internal factors relating to personal determination, self-mastery and will, as well as the externalities that we employ to get us from wherever we happen to be, to our destination or goal. Beyond these most apparent aspects, the image also tends to involve a consideration of power, conceived as an effect of the union of opposites. Think of the battery of an electric engine: it does nothing and goes nowhere until the positive and the negative poles are connected by a conductor. Often, the image of The Chariot portends a mutual coordination of efforts on the part of two people or other entities. A client asked for an overview of her marriage, which was entering into a milestone twentieth year. She did not characterize the marriage in her Reading Request, but a variety of dark images that we drew for her made it perfectly plain that all was not well. In particular the reversal of the image of The Chariot suggested the need for a serious reassessment of where they were and where they were going in their relationship together. The image sang the sad blues lyric, "The wagon done broke down," and we could see that if changes were not undertaken, their future was not bright. As it happened, this image, in particular, carrying as it did a prognosis for the future, had the most impact for our client and her husband. Using its message to cut through a pattern of irresolution and denial, they sought counseling, bringing various issues to the surface, and as a result, they experienced a loving renewal in their relationship that ultimately saved their marriage. |
