The Taming Power of the
Great
The image
of The Taming Power of the Great describes the
mysterious power of divinity that inhabits a
great mountain. This is an idea that is
fundamental in the human psyche, witness the
Greek idea of Olympus, where the gods dwelled. In
the Chinese sense of it, the mountain contains
that power, and also restrains it. Various of its
verses give concrete expression to the idea. In
one, the oracle says, Danger is at hand. It
furthers one to desist. In another,
The axletrees are taken from the
wagon. As a general expression of
restraint, another verse says, The
headboard of a young bull, and another
verse says, The tusk of a gelded bear. Good
fortune. In other words, the power that you
have experienced may be best kept within. It
would NOT be wise to presume upon it, to try to
use it. Beware of confusing the visible and the
invisible. Both are real, but each is
proper to its domain.
