The Images (Hexagrams) of the I Ching Oracle in Psychic Readings

Psychic Readings from The Psychic Internet often feature images drawn from the I Ching Oracle. To offer supplementary information about these images for our clients, and for the public, we have provided this archive of brief articles.

The abstract images of the I Ching Oracle (usually called "hexagrams") symbolize all of the related and interacting aspects of reality. In the following excerpts from actual Psychic Readings, the images of the I Ching are discussed.

Oppression

The name of the image of Oppression may be better translated (as it is by Ritsema/Karcher in their edition of the I Ching) into English as “Confining.” Richard Wilhelm translates the Judgment as follows: “Oppression. Success. Perseverance. The great man brings about good fortune. No blame. When one has something to say, it is not believed.” But a more literal translation (again, by Ritsema/Karcher) would be more to the point in this particular instance. Thus: “Confining. Growing. Trial: Great People significant. Without fault. Possessing words not trustworthy."

You will note that there is success indicated in this image. But you should understand that it describes a success that comes by way of error and oppression. In the verse that is highlighted specifically for you by today’s Reading from the image of Oppression, the oracle says, “He comes very quietly, oppressed in a golden carriage. Humiliation, but the end is reached.” Since this aspect and verse details a close connection between you, as the subject of this verse, and another person who is depicted in another of the verses, Confucius says: “His will is directed downward. Though the place is not appropriate, he nevertheless has companions.” You may want to ask yourself, Is this man (that is, are you) oppressed in his golden carriage through impatience?

In fact, this aspect of the image precisely parallels the situation that you find yourself in. Therefore, when the oracle says, “Possessing words not trustworthy,” it is probably very important for you to pause and consider your next move with greater caution. Our feeling is that no very great harm will be done whatever you decide. As the oracle suggests, ultimately one comes to success. After all, your own motivations are essentially right and good. Nevertheless, a good deal of unnecessary “humiliation” could be avoided entirely IF you take a more circumspect attitude toward helping E., whose motivations are much more complex.

Some other verses attached to the image of Oppression may also be worth meditating on. One says, “Oppression means an encounter.” Another says, “Oppression is the test of character. Oppression leads to perplexity and thereby to success.” And, “He who considers the mouth important falls into perplexity.” As we all know, people generally use very fine words when they are moving in together, but not always when they move out again. Keep this in mind as you decide whether or not to move in with E. And another verse says, “Ascending and not climaxing necessarily Confines” – which speaks so eloquently about the prospect of platonic love in these specific circumstances. But consider if this sort of confinement might not in this instance be in your best interests.
