called "hexagrams") symbolize all of
the related and interacting aspects of reality.
In the following excerpts from actual Psychic Readings, the images of the I Ching
are discussed.

Development
In your
own consultation with the I Ching, you drew the
image of Development, and I suppose that the
Judgment verse must have given you pause, in view
of the nature of your question. Clearly, it
speaks very directly to your question, saying, as
it does, The maiden is given in marriage.
Good fortune. Perseverance furthers. Did
you then see a great contradiction in the
specific verses that were highlighted for you by
your consultation? I dont think that
contradiction is really the right way to view it.
In
essence, the oracle was telling you that your
marriage is a matter of high propriety, planned
with perfect rightness for you by the Great
Spirit, much in the way that a loving Chinese
father and mother arrange for the marriage of
their daughter according to the ancient customs
and principles of mutual compatibility that were
the ideal of that traditional society. The whims
and transitory inclinations of the daughter were
viewed as of very little significance in
determining her fate in this regard. Indeed,
there is a hint of the way in which a protracted
process requiring considerable patience may be
involved in the final working out of the details
whenever this particular image appears with
reference to a question of this kind. You may
have wondered if this image suggested that
patience in your relationship with J. would
result in a favorable outcome of the two of you,
viewed as a couple in a longer-range future. But,
the message conveyed by the image is more general
than that. The oracle is telling you that your
future in love and marriage is already a reality
on which you can rely with unquestioned assurance
and confidence. You are approaching to that happy
eventuality, that certain inevitability, with
gradual steps. As Richard Wilhelm, in his great
commentary on this image, says of the way to
proceed along in this process, within is
tranquility, which guards against precipitate
actions. . . The development of events that leads
to a girls following a man to his home
proceeds slowly. The various formalities must be
disposed of before the marriage takes place. . .
The development must be allowed to take its
proper course. Hasty action would not be
wise. This is why the oracle, in the
central verse associated with this image, says,
Thus the superior person abides in dignity
and virtue. . . It is the mature elder
daughter that is given in marriage in this image.
And, mature is the operative word in
this idea.
In fact,
in his more extended commentaries on the image of
Gradual Development, Wilhelm says,
Attainment of a proper place bespeaks a
correct attitude of mind. The fulfillment
of your destiny, you see, certainly does require
a correct attitude. This is why you
have been led to cherish that attribute of
greatness of soul and personhood. You have
everything that it takes to attain to perfection
in life. With gradual progress, you will always
move forward to the consummation of your destiny.
